How To Invest Good Money Into Building Your Office Without Feeling Guilty

Do you work from the couch or propped up in bed because you don’t think you can afford to build a decent office space? Have you created a makeshift desk from a card table, or are you using the spare bedroom (with the bedroom furniture still present) for your office?

If you don’t have a professional setup, or if you can grab your laptop and start working without getting out of bed, it’s time to create a better workspace.

Make your office your first priority

Creating a workspace requires both space and money. Space is easy to create, and so is a budget. The truth is, almost anyone can come up with the funds for a project when it’s something they’re determined to create. Therefore, your first step to creating a new office is to make it your priority.

Whether you’re planning to spend a few hundred dollars or a few thousand dollars on your new office, don’t allow yourself to feel guilty about the cost. Building an office is equally important as paying your mortgage or rent on time. Don’t talk yourself out of it because it requires money. Talk yourself into it, because it’s an opportunity to create your personal creative space.

A home office is an opportunity to go green

If you need an incentive to build your office, do it for the Earth! You already spend most of your time working from your home. Building an office gives you the opportunity to incorporate energy-efficient features into your office that doesn’t exist throughout the rest of your home.

For example, if you opt for a portable shed in your backyard, you can use eco-friendly insulation, an energy-efficient roof, and if you want to go all out, you can go solar. Going green is by far the best way to save money in the long run.

Homeowners compliant with energy efficient standards in California, for example, are expected to save over $7,000 over a period of 30 years. Roofing material and construction will play a significant role in your savings. You can hire someone to build a shed for you from scratch, or you can buy a premade shed and convert it. The benefit to having a custom-built shed is being able to specify the dimensions have shelving built directly into the walls, and you won’t need to create workarounds to wire it up with electricity.

If you’re going to spend a good chunk of time in your home office, it makes sense to invest in as many energy efficient options as possible. The amount of money you’ll save by working in a green office will prove to be a good ROI.

Money is designed for spending

Money exists as a medium of exchange for goods and services. At some point, you’re probably going to spend money on frivolous things like $30 gourmet pizzas and $7 coffees. You may as well put that money toward building an office to support your business success.

Building an office is an investment, not an expense

When you consider an office as an investment rather than an expense, it’s easier to spend money creating one. An investment is something you pour resources into – in this case, it would be time and money – and later, you receive a return. Although intangible, an office yields many returns including:

  • Productive brainstorming sessions. If you’ve tried to brainstorm in an uninspiring environment, you know the value of being in the right space. You can decorate your office however you wish. Fill the space with whatever inspires you.
  • Genius ideas and solid plans. When you’re in a space that belongs to you, your genius comes out. Having your own custom office space will allow your genius to shine.
  • Solutions to problems. Your personal office is the best place to contemplate answers and solutions. You can take short naps like Einstein did, and wake up with the solution.
  • Successful sessions of collaboration. When you jump on conference calls, you’ll feel more relaxed and at ease inside of the office space, you’ve created from scratch.

Have fun building your office space

Everybody loves spending money on something, whether it’s a good dinner, a new tech gadget, or a collectible item. Instead of spending your free cash on stuff that sits around the house collecting dust, invest that cash in developing a professional workspace so you and your business can thrive.
